WordPress backup is one of the most important issues that one must focus on. Things go wrong every now and then on Internet; it might be a malware, or a hacker playing games with your website.



Not necessarily somebody has targeted your website but still due to hardware and software issues at your server, things do get out of hands and result in a disaster.



Website breakdown or website crash is a very common event, which we all notice and have to face, in our journey of website and blog marketing.




If you think, that your host server is taking a backup of your website for you,you better think twice before relying on your hosting company.

Even if they are , but still the backup remains with the server your hosting company.



What happens if things go wrong at the level of server, and if such a tragedy happens, what will happen to your backup?

Secondly, it is not necessary that  your hosting company is taking a backup for you, you have got to be doubly sure before you rely on your hosting company, however big that hosting company is.



Check it out, with your hosting company, are they regularly taking  backup of your website and does your hosting plan, has got the backup facility.

Most of the times you will have to pay extra amount to your hosting company for the regular backups.



But still you may not be very sure, are they really taking backups for you, and even if they are, the problem is the backup remains at the server, which is very risky as at times even the backups taken by your hosting company also gets corrupted.



Now you are having a corrupted backup file in your hand which is  no good for you. 

You may have argument with your hosting company, but the problem remains with the corrupted backup file your website is dead, and this means you may have to work all over again, right from the scratch and build up your website again!!!  Don’t be a Vitim,of such an unfortunate situation.




I think you have got my point and you just cannot rely on any hosting company for your backups.

You better take your own backups and must keep the backup files with you safely and update them continuously on a regular basis.

 Most common way of storing this backup files is in the cloud, where in regular backups taken manually are automatically and periodically stored safely.




Well I’m sure after reading this you are at ease, and you are eager to know the best  possible way to back up your WordPress website.

Let me tell you this free WordPress backup plugin is wonderful, works marvelously, reliable  and is,thousand times better than many other paid WordPress backup plugins.

So let us learn in a step-wise manner, how to install and configure your free WordPress backup plugin -Updraft plus.

For the sake of, beginners in WordPress, first let us learn how to install your free WordPress backup plugin-Updraft plus.


 Installation of free wordpress backup plugin:

  • Open your WordPress admin profile, 
  • Go to your plugins section, 
  • Click on add new, 
  • In the search box type Updraft plus, 
  • Click on Updraft plus install it, 
  • After installation is complete click on activate.


There you go, your Updraft plus free WordPress backup plugin is installed and is active on your WordPress website.



Configuration of free wordpress backup plugin:

  • Once again, go to the menu on your WordPress admin dashboard,
  • You might already see a new option called as Updraft plus backups, 
  • If not yet visible, click on your settings,
  • Inside the settings section you can see, last two tool named as updraft plus backups,
  • Click on this.


Here comes the configuration page for your free WordPress backup plugin.
Now you can see a display, on the top of the page saying Updraft plus backup/restore.

In this page, locate your settings tab, and click on it.
  • Here it will ask,
  • Files backup schedule-set it on automated-weekly(recommended),
  • Retain these many scheduled backups-set it to 2(recommended),

you can still choose your own frequency and number of files you want to retain, it’s for you to decide.


  • In the second row it will ask for, 
  • Database backup schedule-set it on to daily (recommended) and
  •  Retain these many scheduled backups-set it to either seven or 14(recommended), but whatever you want to choose you can decide on your own.




This WordPress backup plugin-Updraft plus, backups your website content in the form of files and database.

All the content which usually does not change or is not updated is stored as a file.




All the contents which are usually updated, for example ,comments on your posts etc. are stored in database.

This WordPress backup plugin-Updraft plus ,takes the backup of your website in separate folders like plugins backup, database backup, themes backup, media files backup.




This is a very good facility which this free WordPress backup plugin- Updraft plus has given to us, as we can selectively restore which ever files are corrupted or crashed.



For example if you feel, that after your WordPress theme update, your site has crashed it is possibly something to do with your theme file, and you can selectively restore your previous team backup, and that’s it, your job is done!!!

Well the next thing for configuration is, storing your backups.
And it will give you different options you just have to choose whichever is comfortable for you.

I have my backup stored in Dropbox.
Just create your account and follow instructions to link your Dropbox account to this free plugin.




Once you have successfully linked your dropbox account to the free WordPress plugin Updraft plus, it will take you to the page of current status, below this will see the tab of backup now, restore, and clone/migrate.




Click on backup now and take your very first backup manually. Future backups are all automated and will stored ,as per your configuration.

How to restore word press website?

Follow these steps ,in case your website gets hacked,
  • First -go for a fresh installation of WordPress,
  • Install Updraft plus free WordPress plugin, and 
  • Click on upload backup files ,
  • Which downloads the backup files from your Dropbox and brings them in your WordPress and 
  • Then you click on restore .


In this way, you will be able to restore your website to the previous date or day, in case you had an unfortunate event of website crash or your website gets hacked.



This way you can restore your website from your own backups without relying on anybody else and is the safest possible way, that too for free……
